David's Story

Summer camp was my life in High School and College.  I would start getting giddy as spring arrived and I anticipated feeling the warm sun on my face, jumping into the cool lake water, and devouring the best homemade peach cobbler you’ve ever had.  My oasis, Presbyterian Point Camp, was my home away from home located on the border of North Carolina and Virginia on Kerr Lake.  It was my place to relax, play, and be.  Being able to “be” is what made this place so heavenly to me.  I was able to show up exactly as God created me and I was affirmed and accepted as a Child of God by this faithful and humble community.  You can imagine the draw of such a place and why it became my holy place.

My memories and experiences from Presbyterian Point provide the lens in working with the planning team to create the curriculum for this year’s Undercare retreat.  Our goal is to create an authentic community where everyone can relax, play and be.  What a gift to offer anyone on life’s often chaotic and stressful journey!

The theme for this year’s retreat is exploring both our inward and outward call by exploring God’s call to Samuel (1 Samuel 3:1-10).  By listening to these ancient words we hope to encounter how God is calling each of us today to be faithful disciples in an ever-changing world.  In addition to exploring call we plan to incorporate practical skill-building workshops throughout the weekend, including a fantastic session on leadership styles.

Finally, the weekend wouldn’t be complete without worship.  It is hard to put words to the transformative power of our time in worship.  The services ground us in God’s love and reaffirm that we are children of God.  For many of us who have been rejected, devalued and discriminated against by the Church due to our sexual orientation or gender identity, these worship services are powerful healing moments of claiming God’s call in our life.  To me we become the Church in these incredible moments of worship.

We seek your prayers for the planning team as we create space this summer for all to experience relaxation, playfulness, and being—and maybe even some homemade peach cobbler!
