Dear Friends of Parity,
Here we are, just a few days before Pentecost, and it appears the Holy Spirit is once again at work. Change is coming to Parity, and we are excited to welcome it in.
After four years with Parity, the Rev. John Russell Stanger is stepping down as executive director to begin a graduate program in Marriage and Family Therapy at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. John’s last day with us is June 23. The Board of Directors has begun a national search to identify the next executive director of our organization.
John has done superb work with Parity, and we are sad to see him go. Since joining us as Organizer of Mission and Advocacy in 2012, John has created a ministry that has touched more than 1,000 LGBTQ and allied youth throughout New York City. In the wake of polity change in the Presbyterian Church (USA), he has shepherded a community of LGBTQ pastors into their ministries, and planted the seeds that will enable us to extend our emerging pastors program to other Christian traditions. In his 18 months as executive director, he has boosted our financial support from individual donors, congregations and foundations by close to 10 percent and given Parity the strongest balance sheet in our history.
While it is difficult to say goodbye to a young leader of John’s ability, we celebrate this next step in his ministry. John writes that “Parity nurtured me as a young man discerning ordination, into a minister in his first call, and finally in nonprofit leadership.” Parity exists to create a world where gender and sexual identity are not barriers, but pathways, to the full and faithful lives we are called to by God. As he continues to follow the Spirit’s lead, John is a testament to the power of Parity’s ministry.
We now seek the next executive director to guide the four principal programs of Parity — our emerging pastors program; our ministry to LGBTQ youth; Not So Churchy, the worshipping community founded and led by the Rev. Mieke Vandersall; and the Parity Awards, recognizing national leaders in the movement toward a healing and inclusive Church. You will find the posting on Idealist with a complete position description and other information about Parity on our website.
We welcome your support, and your prayers, as we enter this new time in our ministry. We trust that the Holy Spirit is guiding us toward the individual with the particular talents, passion and vigor to lead us forward. I am excited for the day when we introduce that person to you.
Thank you for your support of Parity. On behalf of the Board and staff, and of all those we seek to serve, I wish you a blessed Pentecost.
Timothy Palmer Curl
President, Board of Directors
